99 Red Balloons

A piece I am working on for Canteen Gallery, and their upcoming group show. The theme, of the show, is the song "99 Luft Balloons." A couple of people that I went to Art Center with are also in this show, such as, Eunice San Miguel, Shannon Freshwater and Connie Wong.

I tried to illustrate the paranoia that existed in the story. Red balloons are being carried by clouds shaped like missiles in the air. Their collective paranoia which only exist in their imagination I tried to show through merged thought bubbles that imitate black smoke after a firey devastation. And their bodies made out of hands are to show their concern for their sense of security.

I don't know what I am going to title it, yet.

I just found out I misunderstood and it's not about the song, but an open concept that must include the theme of 99 red balloons.

Wrap Magazine. I did the illustration, Miguel Inuretta did the text, and Kurt Anderson did the writing. This term's magazine is about history repeating. Our page is about the idea of time/ history as a constant process of "blooming" and "withering."
We thought the best representation of this idea was the dandelion. The option of color was not available for this issue, and we were also challenged with the gate-fold format of the magazine (how page one transitions into page two, etc.) Overall, I like how it turned out.

Hair and nails.

This is an assignment for my fine art class, Rethinking Art, with Tom Laduke (he looks like Moby/ Billy Corgan.) The assignment was to create an unconventional self-portrait. This is a collection of nervousness, doubt, worry, etc. The nest is made entirely out of my hair. I didn't use anything to hold it together, just a whole lot of patience. And the nails are from some of the people who I specifically worry about.
I'm sorry about the lighting, I planned on taking a photo of it with the gallery lighting during class but when I came back they were moved.. and I am only so tall.

I had a lot of fun with this. When I have the time, I want to make a more accomplished version of it.

Disease so far

Based on this article I read about how you can find evidence of cardiovascular disease through hair. Still in progress.. and my camera sucks a little bit. I can't seem to get that little grease area out of the lens.

Someday I will have better photos. Someday..

Marta of the Amargosa

Something I've been working on. This is a portrait of Marta, the owner of the Amargosa hotel, and the only performer at the Amargosa Opera House.
My first impression of her was of a very persistent but dying tree. She is this frail old lady that lived her life as a dancer 100%. But due to old age, she can no longer use her legs anymore. So now instead of dancing, she entertains guests through song and monologue. But even though it was horribly.. horribly depressing, it was also just as amazing. Her dedication and love to performing is very clear, and something you cannot help but respect. It is inspiring to see someone be that dedicated and in love of what they do. If nothing else, you should all go just to see her passion. Those are things you just don't forget.

I drew her legs as if they were made of dying bark. And I drew her lungs as two living trees.

For this project I used only one black 0.1 micron pen on unprimed canvas sheet. By the time I got to her toes, the tip of the pen was like feather. I used a brush pen for the chair.

Cure

A watercolor painting about cures of the stomach ache I did in Jason Holley's Image and Idea class. It's an old Asian thing. You massage the blood of your arm to your hand, then you tie a string around your thumb, then you prick your thumb with a needle. Dark blood comes out and your stomach feels better. Scout's honor...

These are terrible photos, I'm hoping to find a huge scanner somewhere sometime soon.

I'm had so much fun with this that I decided to create a series of Cures. I'll post them up as soon as possible.

Burlesque bar

We did an in-class drawing of a model (I always forget her name..) as a burlesque dancer. We had to complete the drawing in composition and idea. At the time, I couldn't remember what this model was supposed to be, so I decided to put her inside a bar with two men. I have accidentally turned a dancer into a tacky bar flirt!!
